Use of Force Workshop

The use of Force Workshop was held for the community of Southeast San Diego on February 21, 2004.

Police professionals today must master organizational, communication and technical skills their predecessors did not have to contemplate. This program is designed to introduce and inform t oday's leaders and community members on law enforcement's "Use of Force".

Occasionally, officers in the performance of their duties encounter situations where the use of force is necessary in order to affect a detention or an arrest, overcome resistance, control a subject, or protect themselves or others from injury. Reasonable force, which may include lethal force, may be used in those situations.

Community policing necessitates that community leaders and police officers work in partnership to combat crime. Law enforcement organizations recognize and respect the value of human life and recognize that any use of force is of concern to all communities.

•  Participants are guided through a "Force Continuum" to gain a perspective on the various force options available to Police Officers.

•  Participants will be asked to role play and respond as a law enforcement officer to various scenarios.

•  Scenarios using paintball guns are utilized to bring the realism of police work to the participants.
